New vs Old Tax Forms 2026: Complete Guide to

Changes Effective April 2026

Published: April 2026 | 6 min read | Your Tax Ease

Starting April 2026, the Income Tax Department has introduced a new tax form numbering system. Forms

you've known for years — Form 16, 26AS, 15G/15H — have new names. The purpose of each form stays the

same, but the numbers have changed. This guide gives you a complete, plain-English map of every old form to

its new 2026 equivalent.

Why Did the Government Change Tax Form Numbers?

The renumbering is part of India's broader push to modernise and streamline the income tax system. The goal

is to make form names more logical, reduce confusion between forms with similar numbers, and align the tax

filing infrastructure with the updated Income Tax Act provisions being rolled out through 2026.

The content and purpose of each form remains unchanged — only the numbering has been updated. You still

need to submit the same information to the same authorities; you just need to know which new form number

corresponds to the old one you are familiar with.

Key Forms Explained in Plain English

Form 16 → Form 130: Your Annual Salary TDS Certificate

Form 130 (previously Form 16) is issued by your employer every year, typically by June 15. It summarises your

total salary, allowances paid, exemptions claimed, and the total tax deducted at source (TDS). You need Form

130 when filing your Income Tax Return (ITR).

15G / 15H → Form 121: Prevent TDS on Interest Income

Form 121 replaces the old 15G (for individuals below 60) and 15H (for senior citizens). Submit this self-

declaration to your bank at the start of each financial year. If your total income falls below the basic

exemption limit, the bank cannot deduct TDS on your FD or savings account interest. Forgetting this form

means unnecessary TDS that you must then claim as a refund.

26AS → Form 168: Your Tax Passbook

Form 168 (old 26AS) is your personal tax credit statement — a complete record of all TDS deducted by

employers and banks, advance tax payments, and self-assessment tax paid. Always cross-check Form 168 on

the Income Tax portal before filing your return. Any mismatch can result in a tax demand or delay your refund.

12BB → Form 124: Declare Your Tax-Saving Investments to Your Employer

Form 124 is the investment declaration you submit to your employer (usually at the start of the financial year

in April). It tells your employer about your planned tax-saving investments — PPF, LIC premiums, home loan

interest, HRA, LTA — so they can calculate the correct TDS to deduct from your salary each month.

16A → Form 131: TDS on Non-Salary Income

Form 131 (old Form 16A) is issued for income from sources like fixed deposit interest, professional fees, or

freelance payments where TDS has been deducted. Banks issue Form 131 for FD interest; companies issue it

to freelancers. Verify it against your Form 168 entries before ITR filing.

15CA & 15CB → Forms 145 & 146: Sending Money Abroad

If you are making a foreign remittance (for education, travel, business, or investments), file Form 145 online

on the income tax portal. If the remittance exceeds ₹5 lakh or falls in specific categories, your Chartered

Accountant must also issue Form 146 (previously 15CB). Banks are required to check these forms before

processing any overseas transfer.

27D → Form 133: TCS on High-Value Purchases

Form 133 (old Form 27D) is your TCS certificate. Tax Collected at Source applies to new cars above a certain

value, overseas travel packages, and foreign remittances above ₹7 lakh per year. The TCS credit shows up in

your Form 168 and can be claimed when you file your return.April 2026 Action Checklist

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the old form numbers still valid after April 2026?

Officially, new form numbers replace the old ones from April 2026 onward. For FY 2025-26 returns filed before

April 2026, old form numbers remain valid. For anything filed or issued after April 2026, use the new numbers.

Do I need to re-submit any forms because of these changes?

No. Previously submitted forms are still valid. The renumbering applies to new submissions from April 2026

onward only.

Will my employer and bank automatically switch to the new form names?

They are required to. The Income Tax Department has issued notifications to all TDS deductors — employers,

banks, and financial institutions — to use the updated form numbers from April 2026.

What happens if I submit under the old form number by mistake?

In most cases the portal will accept either number during a transition period. However, to avoid processing

delays it is best to use the new 2026 form numbers for all submissions made on or after April 1, 2026.
